Barbara Pihos was born in Quincy Illinois. After high school she took a few credits at Western Illinois University and stopped her education to have a family. At the age of 40, after her girls had left home, she took a printmaking course at Elgin Community College and fell in love with the medium.
She has now been producing etchings for 20 years. She recently took 5 years off to attend to health problems, but is now back to creating her etching plates using traditional techniques. She uses a combination of line and aquatint methods, alternating between drawing and painting on a copper plate before repeatedly submersing it in acid. She continues to live in Illinois.
